5 Quick Tips: Healthy Convenience Store Offerings

5 Quick Tips for Healthy Convenience Store Offerings

We’re nearly two weeks into the New Year. For many Americans, their resolution was to eat healthier, which can be a tricky goal to stick to with hectic schedules, commuting, taking kids to extra curricular activities, and about a thousand other obligations in every day life. Convenience stores can act as quick and convenient places to stop and grab a healthy option for consumers to stay on track, but it can sometimes be difficult to find good choices. It’s important for convenience store operators to remember that offering healthy snack and meal choices to their customers–and making sure those options and easily found in the store–could really help their bottom line.

CSP Daily News reports:

About 160 million Americans enter a c-store each day, and 53% of U.S. consumers say they’d visit c-stores more often if there were healthier options, according to a NACS survey.

53% of consumers would visit more often if they knew they’d be able to purchase healthier items? That’s a big number! Don’t miss out on a great opportunity. If a customer asks you for an item like protein bars or fresh fruit, and you don’t currently carry them, you should strongly consider talking to your foodservice distributors about getting those items stocked.

Healthy Grab & Go Options

  • Fruit doesn’t just taste good, but it is good for you. Offer bananas, apples or grape at your check out counter as an alternative to more sugary impulse items. Why apples and grapes? Mens Fitness reports research from Washington State University indicates “berries, grapes and apples turn white fat into calorie-burning beige fat”–making them not just a good option for healthy eating, but also to actively help consumers lose weight.
  • Nuts are a great source of protein. Offering trail mix, pistachios, sunflower seeds, almonds, and nut rich breakfast and protein bars means that your customers will have plenty of options, and reasons to come back for more.
  • Vegetables might sound like an odd choice for a snack to grab at a convenience store, but the healthful benefits make them a great item to offer. According to Mens Fitness and Registered Dietitian Jessica Pearl, “celery helps decrease oxidative stress and inflammation in the body” while carrots are “an excellent source of vitamin A, which is beneficial for eye health, as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants.”
  • Dairy adds protein and calcium to your customers daily routine; try offering yogurt cups, grab-and-go individually wrapped cheese sticks, and pints of milk.
  • Eggs are a great, quick, and cheap option for healthy proteins and nutrients. Two-packs of hard boiled eggs are an easy option to sell; or do a breakfast sandwich offering–with plenty of egg on it.
